We should not study scriptures with an intent to be a critic, or even to endorse preachers. Now, let us study the word "believe" in connection with salvation by Jesus Christ. If I say "I believe Jesus," what do I mean? I don't think that it gives a specific meaning. Let us see: believe what he says (truth teller), believe he is honest, believe that he was killed and was resurrected, believe he lived a Holy and righteous life, believe that he did not respect the Scribes, etc, and such are of course believing Jesus Christ. However, none of these believes will give us eternal salvation.
"Believe in Jesus Christ and you will be saved". This is a famous cliché among Christians. But what do we mean by believe in Jesus Christ? We believe that Jesus Christ will take us to heaven, no matter what we do. Is it believe in Jesus Christ? Let me give an example of believing. Say, I tell someone that I will give him ten thousand dollars if he comes to my office the next day at 8:00 AM. If he needed the ten thousand dollars and if he believed me, he would have come to my office the next day at 8:00 AM. This means that he has believed in me. If he did not show up, it means that he did not have belief in me. This is what believe means. Did Jesus Christ say that he will take us to heaven, if we believe that he will take us to heaven? He did not. So, believing it is not believing Jesus Christ. It is your own belief or you have believed some preachers who say such things. Believing Jesus Christ is to believe what he says and to do them.
In Luke 6:46 Jesus Christ says: "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?." Doing what he says is believing him. Not doing what he says, is sin. If we do what he says, then we are not sinning, but doing righteousness. Jesus Christ tells what we must do to be saved or to inherit eternal life. So, if you believe Jesus Christ, do what he tells you to do for eternal life. Jesus Christ is holy and righteous. He is not a respecter of persons and he will do righteous judgment. So, believe in Jesus Christ means that we believe in his holiness, integrity, character, and so on and he will not do anything which is not true. This is what to believe in him. If you are good, he will judge you as good, and if you are evil, he will judge you as evil. Most of the times, preachers say wrong things as if he will favor us, which is not true. God is not respecter of persons, which means that he will not favor anybody.
