Man is in God's Image and after God's likeness

"Mark 16:15 preach the gospel to every creature. Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded: Revelation 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega .. 14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, .. they .. have right to the tree of life, and .. enter .. the city."

I am a retired pastor of the Church of God (Tennessee).
My name is Isaac Livingston. I am from Neyyoor India.

1. God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:

"Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:--- 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." God identified himself in plural as well as in singular. We have studied that God is three souls (persons, plural) and he is the only Omni-Power Spirit (body, singular). If you like to study the details, please click on this link: "Three-in-One". So, the person of God is Soul and the body of God is the Omni-Power Spirit. Man and woman were created in his image and in his likeness. Image is exact or identical and the likeness is a miniature sample that resembles. The soul of man was created exactly as (in the image of) the soul of God. But, the spirit of man was created as a miniature sample in the resemblance (in the likeness) of the only Omni-Power Spirit of God. The likeness just resembles, but do not have the power. If I give an example, if the Spirit of God has the light with the intensity of the sun, then the spirit of man will have the light with the intensity of just a candle. Both are lights, but they are not in the same image, but they have the likeness of being light.

2. Soul is Identical (image), Spirit is miniature sample (likeness).

So, the person of man is in the same image of the person of God. The character attributes come from the soul (person). So, the person (soul) of a man can also have the same character attributes. The character attributes of God are holiness and righteousness. So, men are also capable of giving the same attributes of holiness and righteousness. So, God requires man to be holy and righteous because God is holy and righteous. The power attributes come from the Spirit of God. It is Omni-Power. Man just resemble the Spirit of God, but has no power. So, God does not require man to do any super natural things. Man can be righteous and holy, but he cannot do anything supernatural.

God has created man and woman on the sixth day of creation according to Genesis 1:27 & 31: (27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 31 And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.) God created both male and female at the same time that is on the sixth day. God took rest on the seventh-day, according to Genesis 2:1-3. But, Genesis 2:5 says, "And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground." That is, even though the creation is complete on the sixth day, after the seventh day rest, there were no plants, since all were in the form of seeds, and there was no man either, because man and woman were in the form of souls. They have yet to receive their bodies. At creation, they (their souls) were in the image of God. But, the image of man, which is the body, was not yet given to them. "Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground," This body was given to man, who was Adam. The body of woman was made latter from the ribs of Adam and was given to the soul of the woman, and she was Eve. In the mean time, Genesis 2:7 says, "... and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." If we are not careful, we may misunderstand this verse. Most Christians think that God made a man of clay (that has no life), and breathed into his (its) nostrils the breath of life to bring the man to life. That is not what the verse says. A living man is already made by the soul and the body. Then, God breathed into this man (not just a body), the holy spirit (the breath of life, it is not air) and this man (who is already a man) became a living soul (man with spirit, man born of the spirit, or born again man).  God has created man in three stages. 1) created the soul, in his image. 2) Then he created flesh man from the dust and joined the soul. Then 3) gave him spirit and made him a born again man, or spiritual man. Please notice one more thing. God is Omni-Power Spirit. Here, the spirit of man, which is the holy spirit, is given to the soul, and the soul became a living soul. In Genesis 1:26 God has decided that he will make man in the likeness of his Spirit. So, we know that the spirit of man is in the likeness of the Spirit of God. Our body is made from the dust. In the body of God, there is no dust of the ground. So, our body is neither in the image, nor in the likeness of God. But, our soul is in the image of the Soul of God and our spirit is in the likeness of the Spirit of God. At our birth, we are born of the flesh. "Genesis 3:19 ... till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." So, our body is made out of the dust of the earth, it is given as the tabernacle to the soul until our death, then the body return to the ground, that is the dust. Our body came from the dust and it will return to the dust. Our spiritual birth has to take place later, as we begin to crave for the spirit, in order to live a holy life to inherit eternal life.

3. Born of the Spirit and become Joint-Heir with Christ

Most Christians may die without being born again, which is born of the spirit. "John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God... 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Everybody is born with a soul that is in the image of God and and with a body. God is three persons (3 souls) in one Spirit. "Jeremiah 5:9,29 --- shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this? Matthew 12:18 --- in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, --- Hebrews 10:38 --- if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him." You and I are made in the image of God, because of our souls. God is a Spirit. "John 4:24 God is a (one) Spirit:" But we are not in the image of his omni-power Spirit, but only in the likeness, which is resemblance (miniature sample), only if we are born of the spirit. Since it is just a resemblance, we cannot do what the Omni-power Spirit can do. But, we can do what his soul can do, that is to live a holy perfect life. The spirit will make the weak soul as a living soul. "John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God." Those who are born of God, that is who are born of the Spirit, will receive power from God in order to become the sons of God. They are the one, who truly believe in Christ, they will become born again, and they will receive power from Christ. "Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." If we mortify the deeds of the flesh (body), we will be the sons of God, because of our souls and the spirit. "Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ;"

4. God is Soul and Spirit in His Glory, and we shall be like him;

Jesus told his disciples in Matthew 19:28 "Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones,..." That is, If we follow Jesus Christ, the we can see him on his throne with all his glory. "1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is." That is, on the day of resurrection, the sons of God will see Jesus Christ in his full glory and at the same time they will also have the same glory of Jesus Christ. How will that happen? "Genesis 3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." Our body is made out of the dust of the earth and we will return to the dust, with no exemption. So, our flesh body will be dissolved. "2 Corinthians 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: 3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. 4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be swallowed up of life. 5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit." We are soul, body, and spirit. Our body that came from dust will return to dust. So the body is gone. But, if we are born again, or born of the spirit, we will have the spirit and it will cover our souls. It not only makes our soul alive as we live, it also will be the backup tabernacle to our soul after we die, or we may say that it is a building (house) that God has given us, that we were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession (Ephesians 1:13-14), in heaven. So, at the time our earthly body returns to dust, the spirit house will take over, and we (our soul) will not be found naked. In another word, this is what mortality is swallowed up with life eternal. This spirit that we are born again with, is the spirit that God gives us as earnest for our heavenly home. When we see Jesus Christ on that day, this spirit will be glorified completely, and we will look the same as our Lord Jesus Christ. But those who are not born again, or not born of the spirit, will be found naked. They will face the terror of God. "10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. 11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences." In heaven, we will be with soul and spirit. We will be like Jesus Christ with all the glory of the spirit.

5. Men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen.

God the creator of everything that is created, lives in the glorious place called heaven. "2 Chronicles 30:27 their voice was heard, and their prayer came up to his holy dwelling place, even unto heaven." The description of heaven cannot even enter in the minds of people. His main purpose of creation is to choose a group of obedient people to live with him, to enjoy his glory forever. "Isaiah 64:4 For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. 5 Thou meetest him that rejoiceth and worketh righteousness, those that remember thee in thy ways:" If we do what God tells us to do and wait for his reward, he will bestow the best unimaginable rewards to us. Further, the person of God and the person of man are in the same image. God (person, soul) has the attribute of perfect holiness. Since we also have identical soul as God, he asks us also to be holy and to be perfect as he is holy and perfect. "1 Peter 1:15 as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."

God became a man and preached the gospel (good news) of the kingdom of heaven. "Matthew 4:23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, ... Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." Those who love God and believe the gospel will follow his steps in obedience. "1 Peter 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:---" God will chose them to be his children, and they will inherit his kingdom. They will become joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. "Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." The suffering of mortifying the flesh will bring great eternal rewards to them.

In short, An omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient, Spirit in whom has three Souls, is God. In the Old Testament, the Souls are known as 'the Most High God', 'the Word', and 'the Spirit of God'. In the New Testament, they are known as 'the Father', 'the Son', and 'the Holy Ghost'. God created all things, and nobody else can create anything. God created Man in the image of His own Soul, and in the likeness of His own Spirit. God chose men for himself according to their works. The spirit of these chosen men will be glorified in eternity and they will be like God, They will be Souls in glorified Spirits. They will be with God for eternity as Sons of God or as Bride of Christ. Will you be there?
