"Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. 2 Corinthians 7:1 ... dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

Character attributes come from the inner person (soul). Attributes of identity and strength come from the body. God said to make man in his image and made our soul as his soul. So, our soul is capable to do what the soul of God does. So, God tells us to be righteous and holy as God is righteous and holy.
If we do what God tells us to do, it will be counted as our righteousness. There is no such a thing that my righteousness is counted to you, and your righteousness is counted to me. Your obedience to God is your righteousness and my obedience to God is my righteousness. The devil confuse this through some demonic deceiving theologians. They preach that we will switch our filthy sins for the righteousness of Jesus Christ, and by so doing the righteousness of Jesus Christ will become our righteousness and our filthy sin will belong to Jesus Christ. This is not only stupidity, but it is satanic teaching. "Deuteronomy 6:25 And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us. Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" We are counted as righteous, only if we obey God. We are told to be holy since God is holy. What is to be holy? "Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life." We become righteous by obeying God and holiness comes by serving God. Righteousness and holiness jointly will give eternal life. Even, witnessing God is serving God. If we want to see God at least in eternity, we must live a holy life here on earth while we are living. "Hebrews 12:14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; 16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright." But preachers mostly preach common sense as the word of God, because they do not even believe the word of God. They compromise holy life and preach it so. But, if you are a person who believe God, and the bible is the word of God, then God says that we need a holy life without which no man shall see the Lord.
"Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:..." God has Souls and Spirit. Man has soul, spirit, and a body of flesh. God does not have a flesh body. So, when God made man in his own image, it refers to the Soul and Spirit, but not the flesh body. So, we will consider the soul and spirit for the study. The creation is in the image and likeness. Image is exact, but likeness is just resemblance. Now, between the soul and the spirit, which is in the image and which has the likeness? Soul is a person, and it carries character attributes. God's character attributes are righteousness and holiness. God told us also to be righteous and holy. And so, God made our soul exactly as (in the image of) his soul. Because of our soul, that is the same as the soul of God, it is possible to live holy and righteous. This is the purpose of God, even to make us qualify to inherit his as joint-heirs with Jesus Christ.
I have a lessons and a video on this topic, on the links for you to see. "Righteous, video", "Be Holy", "Righteous." Thank you.
