What is the Gospel? The gospel is the good news that tells us how we can inherit eternal life. Jesus Christ preached the Gospel when he was alive as a man and what he has preached is recorded in the Bible. Matthew 4:23 says: "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, ..." Mark 1 says: "14) Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, 15) And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel." Jesus Christ sent his disciples to preach his gospel even before he was crucified. Luke 9:6 says: "... they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere." So, Jesus Christ has preached the gospel, taught his disciples to preach the gospel and send them also to preach the same gospel that he has preached. Jesus Christ repeatedly says that we must obey his commandments to inherit eternal life. "Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." Again he says that the inheritance is according to, or in proportion to, our works, or what we have done. "Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be." So, the inheritance of people will be different, in proportion to their work.
Let us look at the cliché gospel that 'believe Jesus Christ and we will go to heaven'. John 3:14 to 16 say, "whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." Here, verses 14&15 tell us to believe the Son of Man, Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified Jesus. Verse 16 tells us to believe the Begotten Son, who is the resurrected Jesus Christ, it is not the (crucified) Man Jesus. This is to receive eternal life. So, we have to believe the crucified as well as the resurrected Jesus Christ, to have eternal life. Please read about who is the begotten Son in this link: "Begotten Son." Believe Jesus Christ means, not just to believe his life story, but to believe what the Man Jesus has preached as the gospel, as well as submit to what the resurrected Jesus Christ is doing (Acts 3:26, 1 John 4:9), to inherit eternal life. If we believe him, we will obey him, in order to inherit eternal life. Most Christians believe that Jesus died and resurrected and think that they are saved and will go to heaven. But actually they will end up in hell, because they will not do what God requires them to do.
God Bless You
