How to Repent or to Change your Mind?

"Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. 2 Corinthians 7:1 ... dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

I am a retired pastor of the Church of God (Tennessee).
My name is Isaac Livingston. I am from Neyyoor India.

Godly sorrow is the fore-runner for repentance. Repent is to change our minds from sinning as well as from the things of this world. Desire the things of heaven so that our life may be one with Christ. If you still sin, tried your best to come out of it but in vain, cry for mercy. God will give his mind to you.

How to Repent or to Change your Mind?

Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be upon you.

A dear sister suggested that I should make a video on how to repent. So, this is the video. Let me tell you how I study my Bible. I study the KJV in English since it is the best. I also study a Tamil Bible in my mother tongue. That Bible was directly translated from Hebrew and Greek. So, it is a great advantage to me. I get the meanings of difficult words from that Bible, but not from dictionaries. Example: Our topic is to Repent. Matt 3:2 says Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. My Bible says change your mind for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. KJV says repent ye. Tamil Bible says change your mind. So, repent is change your mind. Now, the question how to repent became how to change your mind? A foot note: sorrow also was referred as repentance in a few places in the Old Testament. It does not interfere us since our study is from the New Testament.

Matt 3:8 says Bring forth therefore fruits meet for Repentance: God requires fruit for repentance. The fruit is the change of life. If there is no change in life, you have no fruit for repentance. Then repentance lost its meaning, as if you didn't have repentance.

Jesus Christ preached repentance before he preached the gospel. In Matt 4:17 he preached repentance. In verse 23 Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom... He preached repentance as the first part of the gospel and then he preached the gospel. If people had closed minds, he just walked pass them. He didn't force them. In Matt 9:13 Jesus says ... I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. If you act as if you are okay, he will leave you. If you admit that you still sin and need help, then God will have mercy on you. People argue back and forth to prove their points, but Jesus just made his point and walked away. Change of mind or repentance was preached strongly and that was it.

Sorrow is not repentance, but it is a pre-requisite to repentance. We may divide sorrow in two groups. 1 Godly sorrow. 2 worldly sorrow. 2 Cor 7:9 ... ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner ... 10.. godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. So, godly sorrow leads to repentance. It is a pre-requisite to repentance. But the worldly sorrow will not take us to repentance, but it worketh death. So, we must have godly sorrow for repentance.

Matt 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Repent or change your mind is for the kingdom of heaven that is eternal. If we do not repent we will be damned. But, if we repent, that is if we change our minds, then we can be partakers of the kingdom of God. Here, we will see two important things that Jesus Christ requires from us. 1. We have to change our minds from the life of sin, otherwise it will take us to hell. 2. The message repent came to the people who were looking for the Messiah thinking that he will give the Jews their kingdom back from the Romans, which will be the kingdom in this world. But, the messiah preached to repent, that is to change their minds, from the kingdom of the Jews to the kingdom of heaven. The Jews did not like it. Even now Christians seek God for worldly things and not for heavenly things. Col 3:2-4 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. This is to change our minds from sinning as well as from the things of this world and to desire the things of heaven so that our life may become one with Christ.

So far we have: Repentance means change of mind. Godly sorrow is the fore runner for repentance. We must change our minds not only from sins but also from the things of this world. Again, the question remains. How to repent? It is a very difficult question. How to do it?

I like to read 1 Cor 2:6-16. But I do not have the time. Please read it for yourself. This passage shows the difference between the fleshly things and the spiritual things. We should turn ourselves from the mind of the flesh to the mind of the spirit. Verse 16 says that they have the mind of Christ. We also must have the mind of Christ. Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind... Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; That is renew your mind from the fleshly things to the spiritual things. I know it is very hard work. But God is on our side, if we mean business. In Matt 9:13 Jesus says I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. If you still sin, tried your best to come out of it, couldn't do it, cry for mercy. Your repentance should be to change your mind to the mind of Christ. Do you really desire to have his mind rather than your mind? Cry for mercy, cry for mercy, again cry for mercy until you receive his mind. God will give his mind to you sooner than you you think. How to repent?.35 This is how to do it. Go for it. Wish you all the best.

God Bless You
