Who is Satan and What can Satan do?
"Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. 2 Corinthians 7:1 ... dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

Satan is always glorified in false stories. Christians do not discern the deception, but believe these false stories. It is important for Christians to understand what the Bible says about Satan and his ways, so that they will not be misled by these false stories.
God created Satan as a cherub; an angel. God anointed him as the covering archangel. God made him wise and perfect in beauty. At one time, Satan had access to the Garden of Eden; even to the mount of God. Ezekiel 28:12 says: "...Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13) Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14) Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15) Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee." Satan, the beautiful, wise, covering archangel, was perfect in all his ways until he deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden. Eve then deceived Adam without even knowing that she was deceiving her own husband. God cursed all three of them. Some Christians consider Satan to be a rival to God; an enemy equal in status to God. They do not realize that Satan is a creation of God. Satan, Adam and Eve all stood before God in the same status Ė the status of created beings, and God cursed them. Satan, however, has more power than man because he is an angel, a spirit being. This limited power does not mean that Christians should give undue respect to Satan.
Many books claim either that Satan is god of hell or that Satan rules in hell. Most Christians believe these claims. In the fictional epic 'Paradise Lost', Satan says: "It is better to reign in hell than to serve in heaven.Ē Milton presents this statement as a motto of Satan; in the bookís setting, Satan makes the statement while giving a speech to the angels that followed him. Miltonís intention is to present Satan as a rebel and not as a king. But some readers misunderstand Miltonís intention, and think that Satan is the ruler of hell. This is incorrect. Satan was and still is a criminal who will end up in hell and in the lake of fire for his crimes.
The name Abaddon (Hebrew) or Apollyon (Greek) in the Bible identifies the angel who serves God; the angel who is king in the bottomless pit. This angel king is not Satan; rather, he is a servant of God. Christians are falsely taught that this angel king is Satan. Revelation 9:11 says: "And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon." Satan is a fallen angel, evil spirit, a devil. God created hell to punish the devil in everlasting fire; not to make him a king in hell. Matthew 25:41 says: "... into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"
God cursed Satan at the Garden of Eden as soon as he deceived Eve, but God did not cast him out of heaven at that time. This delay gave Satan an opportunity to accuse the brethren to God as in the case of Job. Despite Satanís accusations, God did not curse the brethren in the fashion that he cursed Satan, Adam and Eve. So, Satan continued his efforts to kindle people against God and Jesus Christ, not to obey them. Satan took also an active part in his crucifixion. John 8:40 says: "But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. 41) Ye do the deeds of your father. 44) Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,..." Luke 22 says: "3) Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4) And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them."
Jesus was crucified and died. God raised Jesus from the dead. God made him Lord, Christ and God. Acts 2:36 says: "Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ." Revelation 12:5 says: "And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne." At the glorification of Jesus as Lord and Christ, God send the archangel Michael to cut down Satan and his followers from the heaven of God. Their place in heaven was destroyed and they were permanently denied access to heaven. They are confined to earth, sky (heaven of earth) and its surroundings. So, the accuser of the brethren was cast down. Revelation 12:7 says: "... there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8) And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night." So, for the last two thousand years, there has been no accuser of the brethren before God. Even before his crucifixion, Jesus Christ told his disciples about the casting down of Satan as he gave them power over all evil spirits. Luke 10:18 says: "... he said unto them, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19) Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you."
Lucifer had no knowledge of how God would establish the precedent for humans to inherit his kingdom. Still, Lucifer would have guessed that Godís plan would be fulfilled through Jesus Christ, and that God would raise Jesus Christ above all. Satan sought to stop Godís plan and take the place of Godís Son in heaven. Without knowing how God would raise Jesus Christ up above all, Satan took an active part in the crucifixion of Jesus to destroy the plan of God. Little did he know that this crucifixion was the plan of God, and that his participation helped bring Godís plan to fruition. Genesis 3:15 says: "And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." 1 Corinthians 2 says: "7) But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: 8) Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.Ē Satan was blinded by pride and by his desire to exalt his throne above the stars of God. So, Satan bruised the heel of the seed of the woman (Jesus of Nazareth,)at the cross. For these actions, God cut the devil to the ground; and he will also be locked into hell for a thousand years during the time of the Millennium reign of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. Isaiah 14 says: "12) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13) For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14) I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15) Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit."
Jesus Christ characterizes the devil primarily as a liar and a murderer. The devil is also identified as the father of religious people, including ungodly Christians and even Jews. John 8:44 says: "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it." Acts 13:10 says: "And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?"
The inherent desire of people is to enjoy everything, including the things God says not to do. Somehow, Christianity offers people a license to enjoy the things that God says not to do, yet still escape hell and go to heaven. But, if they believe what God says, Christians will fear God and obey God. So, the devil preaches different gospel, which does not fear God. He teaches an easy but counterfeit salvation that enables sinning people to declare themselves saved. 2 Corinthians 11 says: "13) For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works." Contrary to Satanís false gospel, the Bible says that the true gospel is the gospel preached by the Lord Jesus Christ.
Satan and his followers are evangelizing the world with another gospel; a false gospel which requires neither fear of God nor obedience to God. This false gospel relies on the love of God (because he created them) toward all Christians. Contrary to this false gospel, the Lord Jesus Christ calls on us to obey and fear God. Luke 12:4 says: "ÖBe not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. 5) But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him." John 14 says: "15) If ye love me, keep my commandments. 24) He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings." 2 Thessalonians 1:8 says: "In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:"
Satan continues to rebel against God. Because of his rebellion, when Jesus Christ begins his thousand year rule, Satan will be bound in hell for thousand years. Revelation 20 says: "1) And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 2) And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, 3) And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season." At the end of the thousand years, God will set Satan free from hell. Revelation 20:7 says: "And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison" After he is freed, Satan will deceive people again and will start a war. After this, God will throw Satan into the lake of fire. Revelation 20:10 says: "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
Satan, the devil, the Old Serpent, will be thrown into the lake of fire, and then God will destroy the earth and the heavens. Then the Lord Jesus Christ, God of gods and Lord of lords will begin the judgment to the people. Revelation 20 says: "11) And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them. 12) And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works." So, when the judgment starts, Satan will not be the public prosecutor (accuser of brethren) arguing cases in equal status with the Lord Jesus Christ. He wonít be busy as the prosecutor, but he will be busy burning in the lake of fire.
