What is Sin? God tells us not to sin.



"Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. 2 Corinthians 7:1 ... dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

 What is Sin? God tells us not to sin.

Preachers say that it is not possible for us not to commit sin. They say: we must realize it and ask God for forgiveness so that God may save us by his grace and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ wipes out all our sins (past, present and future sins). That is, we can enjoy our sins and go to heaven since Jesus Christ has died on the cross for us. Jesus Christ died for the sins of the whole world and every Christian believe it. Just because we believe it, can we sin without fear and go to heaven as if nothing has happened? Is it true according to the Bible, OR, our preachers just say it because it is the part of their job to tell this. If what they tell is a lie, we all end up in eternal hell. This is a big gamble!

This preaching sounds very good and comforting. But, is it true that Jesus Christ died to help us commit sins without fearing God? No, it is a trick of the devil to deceive people. Preachers use slogans, clichés, jokes, fun, politics, and religiosity for sermons and entice people with it. They do not care to study the word of God and to preach from it. Instead they stay ignorant in the word of God even though they have degrees in theology. It is sad that Christians take their word as the word of God whereas they preach opposite to the word of God. However, let us see what the Bible has to say about this very important eternal life matter.

1. What is Sin and when we begin to sin?

Even Jesus Christ was made in the flesh of sin, but that did not make him a sinner. "Romans 8:3 ... God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, ... 1 Peter 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 1 John 3:5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin." So what we made out of, is not sin, but what we do is either sin or righteousness. See, Jesus did not commit sin. So, we do not have to commit sin. Further, babies are wonderfully made, even though mothers and fathers are sinners. Refer Psalm 139: 13-18 and Psalm 51:5. "139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me." Babies have no sin and their innocent mischief is not counted as sin. As they grow to youth, they will have conscience and their mischief will be turned into sin and will be counted as sin. Job 20:11 His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust. Psalm 25:7 Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness' sake, O LORD. Jeremiah 3:25 We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God. They all have begun to commit sin from their youth. When they have committed sin, they knew that they are sinners. So, those who feared God have repented and cried out to God for salvation.

Sin is any transgression of the law of God; any disobedience of divine command; Or, any violation of the will of God, either in purpose or conduct; or moral deficiency in the character of a person. "1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law." Christians are taught that we are saved while we are yet committing sin. The Bible says that those who commit sin are sinners irrespective of what they say. "John 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. Romans 6:16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?" However the mysterious phenomenon is that those who are prone to sin are sinners even though they are not committing the act of sin at this moment. Sinners will commit sin when they get the opportunity to do it. "Matthew 5:28 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: 27 But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." The real sinner is the inner man, who is the embodiment of the inherent character of the person, which is the soul. If this inner person desires sin he is a sinner even before he/she commits sin. If a person commits sin, it is proof that he/she is a sinner. The old man of sin is still in them. They are sinners until the old man pass away and they are born new that is of the Spirit. This happens only by the grace and the work of God. Grace is given to believers so that they do the works that God tells us to do and God also does a work of salvation in them, making them his workmanship.

Carnal mind is sin and it will relate to worldly, temporal, physical and even sexual desires. Spiritual mind desires godly things pertained to heaven. Those who are born of the Spirit will have the Spiritual mind and they will desire the things in heaven. "Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." Envy, strife and divisions are also carnal and they are even found among the evangelicals. "1 Corinthians 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?" So, be spiritually minded to please God.

2. List of Sins

Let me quote enough verses from the Bible to bring a list of sins for the benefit of believers. This list will help them to avoid speculation of what sin could be and it will give an idea of God’s definition for sin. Those who commit sins are sinners. This list will help you all from false preachers. They always exaggerate sin in such a way to explain that even if we talk loud it is sin, if we walk fast it will be sin, even if we breath it may be sin, etc, just to prove that we cannot live without sinning. They will ridicule and laugh at you at the idea of not sinning. So, this list will help calling a sin as sin, without exaggerating what sin is. Please do not accept the interpretation of preachers for what sin is.

Matt 15:19 For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:  Mark 7:21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Romans 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet. 28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; 29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Eph 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. 8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

If we read them carefully, we will know that we will not inherit heaven, that is the kingdom of God, if we do the sins from this list. And the wrath of God will be upon those who are not converted from these sins and has become new creatures that is born of the spirit.

Please consider this verse also. "1 John 5:3 says, "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous." This verse says that if we love God, it is not hard to live without committing sin. It is true. Please click on the links for a video and an article, to study the details. 3. Can we be sinning and go to heaven?

It is a debatable question. Bible scholars say 'yes' but the Bible says 'no.' Christian studies talk about grace, faith, mercy, cross, blood of Jesus, etc for our inheritance in heaven. All are true, but not complete. If these are working on a person, it will change him/her from being a sinner to a righteous person and then he/she will inherit heaven. So, the bottom line where rubber meets the road is whether the person is still sinning or not. The Bible says that a sinning person is not converted to God. And so, he/she will never inherit the kingdom of God, which is heaven.

Jesus Christ told his disciples that even they will not enter heaven if their righteousness do not exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees. "Matthew 5:20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven." God's righteousness is opposite to sin. But, in this case, the righteousness has to exceed the righteousness of the religious leaders.

Sinners who stopped to sin will go to heaven. But sinning people, who will not stop to sin, will not go to heaven. "Romans 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, 30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: 32 Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them. 1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, 10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."

Let no man deceive you with vain words. Sinning people will not inherit the kingdom of God. The wrath of God is upon the children of disobedience. "Ephesians 5:3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience." The wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience. "Colossians 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:" Sodom and Gomorrha are for an example for sinning people in eternal fire that is hell. "Jude 1:7 Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire." The word of God says that sinning people are under the wrath of God. They will not go to heaven, but go to eternal fire. Let no man deceive you with vain words. But, it is very unfortunate that Christians are taught that we are saved while we are yet committing sin. The Bible says that those who commit sin are sinners irrespective of what they profess or believe. However the mysterious phenomenon is that those who are prone to sin are sinners even though they are not committing the act of sin at the moment. Sinners will commit sin when they get the opportunity to do it. So, willingly stop being a sinner, rather than try not to sin. Then, mind will give room to God for his grace and power to work and convert your being or soul. Then, your person will become righteous and holy, and as a result you will not sin.
