"Matthew 28:20 Teaching them to observe (do) all things whatsoever I (Jesus Christ) have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.2 Corinthians 7:1 ... dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."
I am a retired pastor of
the Church of God (Tennessee).

Matthew 7:21-24 say, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." Here, Jesus Christ explains two kinds of works. Call Jesus Christ 'Lord, Lord,' which is flattering him, which is the typical of our worship, such things are not counted for salvation. But, we are required to do the works that is 'the will' of 'God the Father'. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 say, "this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: 4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; 5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: 6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. 7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness." So, holy living is required and accepted as good works. But, prophesying, casting out devils, doing miracles, and such works will not be counted for eternal life. But rather, the obedience to the preaching of Jesus Christ, is good work built on the rock, is needed for eternal life.
If you are a gentile Christian, you do not have to become a Jew to obtain eternal life. So, you are free from the following works: animal sacrifice, circumcision, ordinances, ceremonies, Jewish traditions, temple worship, tabernacle festivities, feasts, all kinds of Sabbaths, etc. Even if you are a Jew, if you are converted to be a Christian, even you do not have to do these works for eternal salvation. But, you must do what Jesus Christ told you to do for eternal salvation. Preachers preach a few short cuts to heaven. How can they lead you to heaven on their way to hell. "Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen." We must observe all things whatsoever (Jesus Christ has) commanded us to do. Jesus Christ says lastly: "Revelation 22:14 Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." So, they that do his commandments, will enter eternal into the city, the kingdom of God, heaven. But, preachers have convinced people that the obedience to Jesus Christ is works, and they have very successfully connected it with Ephesians 2:8-9 "saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works," and preach that if we try to obey Jesus Christ, we will go to hell. It is tragic.
