Our study portion for today is: John
1:38 to the end of the chapter. In the last session, we saw John
the Baptist saying that Jesus was the Lamb of God. Two of his disciples
heard it and immediately they
followed Jesus. 38&39
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek
ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,)
where dwellest thou?
He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw
where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth
hour. They have spent that night with Jesus because it was late at
night. 40&41 One of the
two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's
brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have
found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Messiah, is the expected deliverer and king of the Jews. Christ
is the Son of God, who will deliver & rule the Jews as Messiah. So,
Christ is Messiah. Andrew seems to know scriptures very well. John
the Baptist told that Jesus was the Lamb of God. Messiah must be cut off
according to Daniel 9:26.
And Messiah must rule in the Millennium
according to
Daniel 9:25. Christ, the Son of God, must rule
in Millennium according to Daniel 2:34, 35, 45 & Revelation
20:4. So, Christ will be the coming Messiah.
Andrew figured them out since he knew scriptures. He was looking for his
brother Simon, who was Peter, not only did he tell him these things, he
brought him also to Jesus. Verse 42
he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon
the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A
stone. Jesus beheld Simon and said that he is son of Jonah and he
will be called Cephas that is a stone. Peter means rock
according to Matthew 16:18. So, he is stone and
rock according to
Jesus. He was Simon Barjona, meaning son of Jona. But how did
Jesus knew these things? Christians will say that Jesus was God, so he knew
everything. It is not bad thinking, but it is not true. At that time, he was
a man. John 1:33 says
the
Spirit of God descended and remaining on him. It is Holy Ghost
abiding. John 3:34 says Jesus
speaketh the words of God: for God giveth the Spirit not by measure unto
him. Jesus says in John 8:26
he speaks those things which he has heard from God.
Verse 28 God taught him these things to
speak. So, Jesus spoke like this being a man.
John 1:43&44 The
day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip,
and saith unto him, Follow me.
Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and
Peter. Jesus made a trip to find Philip.
Jesus did not call many men to follow him, but if he did, they
followed him, because God the Father gave them to him
according to John 10:29. 1:45
Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have
found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of
Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Here it says as son of Joseph.
When Jesus was living, every common person knew him as the son of Marry and
Joseph. The virgin birth was revealed to the chosen people in its own time.
But our preachers often say, as if he was the talk of the town as an
illegitimate son. It is not true. They should not say this. It lacks common
sense and it is ignorance. The verse also says
that all prophets, including Moses, wrote about Jesus in the Old Testament. We
studied it in the last session. 46
Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come
out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see. There was a
saying that no good thing come out of Nazareth. They said the same thing
about Galilee also, according to John 7:41. It was
just a saying of that day, but not scripture. Matthew
2:23 says, he came and dwelt in a city called
Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He
shall be called a Nazarene. So, scriptures say that Jesus will come
out of Nazareth. John 1:47
Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him,
Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!
Guile is deceitful, cunning, politically correct talk of flattery. It
is double talk. 48
Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said
unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree,
I saw thee. Again, it is God the Father shows the things to him. When
Nathaniel heard it, he got so excited and answered in
verse 49... Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou
art the King of Israel. Every Jew was waiting for Christ to come and
take the reign from Rome. They were actually waiting for the Lion of Judah,
but not the Lamb of God. 50&51
Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto
thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater
things than these. And he saith unto him,
Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the
angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. Even
though such an account is not recorded in the Bible,
in Matthew 3:16 the heavens were opened unto him,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
17 says lo a voice
from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
John the Baptist has seen it and it was
recorded. Here the chapter ends. Let us see the highlights of what we have
studied from the first chapter of John.
In chapter 1, we studied about John the
Baptist. He was prophet Elijah because of his spirit & power. God is
three Souls in one Spirit, he is the creator of everything that is
created, his first day creation is the light of man or the spirit of man,
which is also holy spirit. Then, God the Word has become an ordinary
man in sinful flesh, but lived without sin by the grace, spirit & power of
God. He wants men to receive the same grace, spirit & power of God so that
we may also live the same way as he lived. God is Light. Jesus Christ
is the true Light. He gives light to all men that receive him. If we follow
him, we will not walk in darkness. Light and darkness are symbolic. Truth &
lie, righteousness & unrighteousness, good & evil, spirit & flesh, holiness
& sin, just & unjust, etc are the opposites. They will not unite or merge
because God has separated them. To believe on his name is to
believe that he
is our
Lord & Master, he will save us from sins, and as Christ he will turn us away
from our sins. Born again is to receive the spirit of Jesus, and to
grow in grace and power so that we may live like Jesus.
